The Canadian Payments Association has developed new standards
for cheques in Canada. In January 2006, they issued what should
be their last set of clarifications. By January 2007, all cheques
cleared in Canada are expected to use the new format and they hope
by January 2007, all businesses will adopt the new cheque format.
It is likely old format cheques will still be processed after January
2007 but this has not been stated clearly.

The purpose of the change is to allow for better quality electronic
imaging of cheques. One important change is that all cheques must
now have the cheque number magnetically encoded on the bottom. These
are available from your bank for manually produced cheques. Other
changes include date and amount field changes and standard printing
on the back of the cheque.
Laser Printer Required
When produced from a computer, pre-printed cheque numbers are
messy to deal with in the event of paper jams. For some time now,
some CIM-Data customers have been printing magnetic cheque numbers
using magnetic toner in their laser. Since the bank can read the
cheque number and include it in their statements, reconciliation
is much easier.
* Special Magnetic Toner Required
Magnetic toner cartridges cost an additional 10% to 20% (amounting
to perhaps $2 per thousand cheques) and are available for most laser
printers. If you have trouble finding one for your laser, we may
be able to source one for you. We really suggest a separate, small
laser printer for cheque printing.
Security Paper with Reduced Costsss
We took this opportunity to re-package cheques. Starting in February,
in addition to fully custom printed cheques, we will supply pre-printed
cheque paper with built-in security features to help detect tampering.
Instead of pre-printing your name and your bank name, we will supply
logo macro files which will be printed when the cheque is printed,
providing additional security protection against stolen cheques.
Cheque paper will now also be available in smaller quantities.
Overall, your costs for cheque printing, even with a laser printer,
should be the same or lower as in the past.
